Iran's new president is a former operative of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, responsible for the nation's missile and nuclear weapons programs.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been elected by a landslide in a victory that stunned U.S. and other Western diplomats. On June 24, Ahmadinejad, the mayor of Teheran, defeated Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former president who headed the Expediency Council, the regime's watchdog over what had been a reformist-dominated parliament.

The 49-year-old Ahmadinejad, who participated in the takeover of the U.S. embassy in Teheran, in 1979, was regarded as the most anti-Western of the presidential candidates.

Also, from comes this primer on this anti-American scumbag...
A virtual nobody on Iran’s national scene, Tehran mayor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, 49, was picked by Iran’s radical Islamic leaders and swung ahead of the presidential race to deal “the heaviest psychological blow to Iran’s enemies.” Those words were uttered by the new president in his first post-election statement Saturday, June 25. They attested to the fact that Iran had chosen him as its tool for getting back at the Bush administration for seeking to bring regime change and democracy to the Middle East and Iran in particular.

UPDATE! (6/30/05): The MSM seems to have caught up to this story which I blogged about on monday, and even President Bush has responded... Of course, this new "President" of Iran was part of the hostage taking! This was an absolutely staged election for the express purpose of getting a hardline, anti-American thug into place. This is a message from Iran. Do we have the heart to respond is the real question...?

Their president gave a very disturbing speech today saying the following:
"The wave of the Islamic revolution will soon reach the entire world," Ahmadinejad said. "In one night, the martyrs strode down a path of 100 years."

"Thanks to the blood of the martyrs, a new Islamic revolution has arisen and the Islamic revolution of 1384 [the current Iranian year] will, if God wills, cut off the roots of injustice in the world," Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official Iranian news agency as saying. "The era of oppression, hegemonic regimes, tyranny and injustice has reached its end."

Sounds to me like Iran's response to our strategy of spreading democracy and freedom around the world will be to spread the tyranny of Islam around the world.
