Well... not exactly Star Trek, but getting closer... From
Scientists are currently researching new technology that would allow a form of teleportation to occur using the Internet. The idea is based on the stop-frame animation technique where models are positioned, a shot is taken, and then the next pose is set up. It is thought that the same technique can be modified to capture a 3D model with cameras, transport the information over the Internet, and recreate the model somewhere else.

Professors Todd Mowry and Seth Goldstein of Carnegie Mellon University are the duo that thought up the idea, and they are also doing the research. Representing the model after transmission is currently being done with objects the size of ping-pong balls, but the professors hope that the final solution will use nano-dust to form the model realistically, as if the object were actually in the room.
