NEW AL-QAEDA PLOT PLANNED MULTIPLE D.C. BOMBINGS

From the TimesOnline:
MI5 is investigating a suspected plot by Islamic terrorists to carry out multiple suicide bombings of the White House and the Capitol in Washington DC.

Whitehall officials say the alleged conspiracy was being organised by a senior Al-Qaeda member using the codename Maximus. He is said to have been communicating by e-mail with associates in Britain and elsewhere.

MI5 officers travelled to Sarajevo in Bosnia two weeks ago to interview Maximus about the White House plot. Security sources said he may have links to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the chief of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Last week Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan police commissioner, said the security services had foiled a number of planned outrages since the July bombings. He warned the authorities were preparing for the risk of further attacks in the coming months.
