Russia has announced its intention to build moon bases to mine the moon for the lucrative Helium-3 isotope. Even small amounts of this amazing chemical compound could produce massive amounts of energy for use on Earth... Obviously, the Russians see control of global energy resourses as a key to their continued existence....
Russia is planning to mine a rare fuel on the moon by 2020 with a permanent base and a heavy-cargo transport link, a Russian space official said on Wednesday.

"We are planning to build a permanent base on the moon by 2015 and by 2020 we can begin the industrial-scale delivery... of the rare isotope Helium-3," said Nikolai Sevastyanov, head of the Energia space corporation. tags
